International Competition for MOLEWA – CHINA

BACK

The project explicitly contrasts two aspects of urban living – creating an indispensable dialogue between urban, public, outdoor living, and more private, intimate home life.  This balanced contrast in the various spaces is emphasized by a change in cladding: the facades of the townhouses facing the road, mostly looking north-northeast, have subtly embellished traditional grey brick cladding evocative of Chinese culture. Facades facing inside the lot instead are clad in sliding wooden screens.

Pres-Lam technology allows connecting prefabricated structural elements in laminated wood (Glulam, LVL or X-Lam) using post-tensioning, or better yet, on-site post-tensioning – typically used with reinforced concrete – both for post and beam construction and structural walls.
